On 9 August 2022, Kenyans went to the polls in what became one of the most closely watched elections in the country's history. William Samoei Ruto, the Deputy President who had fallen out spectacularly with his boss Uhuru Kenyatta, ran on a platform of the hustler nation, appealing to ordinary Kenyans against what he called the dynasties. He won by 233,000 votes out of 14 million cast. His opponent, Raila Odinga, who was backed by Kenyatta, challenged the result but the Supreme Court upheld it. A chicken seller's son from Uasin Gishu had become president.
