When the government of Daniel arap Moi announced plans to build a 60-storey skyscraper in Uhuru Park, Nairobi's most beloved green space, Wangari Maathai stood in the way. She was mocked, harassed, and had her office ransacked. She stood firm. International pressure eventually stopped the project. Maathai had shown that one woman with conviction could stop the government of a country.
