On 4 March 2013, Uhuru Kenyatta was elected President of Kenya by 50.07 percent of the vote, just enough to avoid a runoff. He was facing charges at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity related to the 2007-08 post-election violence. His election sent a complicated message about accountability, about sovereignty and about what Kenyan voters prioritised. Many who voted for him said they did not believe the charges. Others said the ICC had no business determining Kenya's politics. The charges were eventually dropped. Kenyatta served two terms.
