In March 2018, in a moment that stunned Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga shook hands in public and announced a new political partnership. Two men who had spent years attacking each other, whose rivalry had contributed to the 2007-08 violence, were suddenly allies. The handshake divided opinion. Some saw it as statesmanship. Others saw it as betrayal. By 2022, both men had broken with their former allies: Kenyatta backed Odinga against his own deputy, William Ruto, who won the presidency. Kenyan politics, as always, had delivered the unexpected.
