Gengetone, a genre that emerged from Nairobi's housing estates in the late 2010s, was raw, urban, sexually explicit and unmistakably Kenyan. Groups like Sailors Gang, Ethic Entertainment and Ochungulo Family created music that captured the sound and sensibility of young Nairobi. When Gengetone went viral on YouTube and social media, it reached audiences across Africa and in the Kenyan diaspora. It was not the polished Afrobeats that international labels had been promoting. It was Nairobi as it was, not as it aspired to be, and its authenticity was its power.
