Silicon Savannah: Nairobi Becomes Africa's Tech Capital

By 2015, Nairobi had earned a new name: Silicon Savannah. The city had become home to more technology startups per capita than almost anywhere else in Africa. Companies like Ushahidi, which was born to map the 2007-08 violence and became a global crisis-mapping platform, and M-Farm, which connected farmers to markets via mobile phones, had shown that Nairobi could produce world-changing technology. Google, IBM, Microsoft and dozens of global tech giants had set up African headquarters in Nairobi. The city that started as a railway camp was now a hub of the global digital economy.
