Moi Blinks: Multiparty Democracy Returns to Kenya

For years, domestic activists and international donors had been demanding the return of multiparty democracy to Kenya. Moi resisted, called it a foreign concept unsuited to Africa, and detained or exiled those who pushed for it. But by December 1991, the combination of donor pressure, a suspension of aid and growing street protests had become too much. On 3 December, Moi announced the repeal of Section 2A of the constitution, the clause that had made Kenya a one-party state. Multiparty politics were legal again. It was a moment that Kenyans had fought for through years of repression.
