In November 2005, Kenyans voted on a new draft constitution. The government of Mwai Kibaki, which had come to power on a promise of constitutional reform, campaigned for the Yes vote. Raila Odinga and a coalition of opposition figures campaigned for No, using the orange as their symbol. Kenyans voted 57 percent against the draft. It was a political earthquake. The No campaign had defeated the sitting president on his own flagship policy. The constitutional question remained unresolved for another five years, eventually answered in the wake of the 2007-08 violence.
