While the coast traded with the world, the interior of Kenya was being shaped by another great migration. The Nilotic peoples, moving south from the Nile Valley, brought with them cattle herding, warrior culture, and age-grade societies that would define communities for centuries. The Maasai, Samburu, Turkana, Luo and Kalenjin peoples all trace their roots to these migrations. They filled the Rift Valley and the highlands with their cattle, their songs and their fierce resistance to being moved from the land they claimed.
