The Narc Government and the Promise That Was Not Kept

When Mwai Kibaki won the 2002 election, he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Raila Odinga and the Liberal Democratic Party that promised to share power equally and to create a Prime Minister post. When Kibaki was inaugurated, he set the MOU aside. He filled his government primarily with Kikuyu figures. Odinga and the LDP were marginalised. It was a betrayal that would poison Kenyan politics for a decade. The 2007 election was fought, in large part, over this unresolved grievance. The failure to honour an agreement reached in good faith set Kenya on a path to crisis.
