At 10:30 in the morning of 7 August 1998, a truck bomb exploded outside the US Embassy in the centre of Nairobi. The blast killed 213 people, most of them Kenyan office workers and passers-by who had nothing to do with American foreign policy. Over 4,500 were injured. The Ufundi Cooperative House, which stood next to the embassy, collapsed entirely. Seconds later, another bomb went off at the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility. Nairobi had been struck by global terror. The city bore the wounds for years.
