They called themselves the Kenya Land and Freedom Army. The British called them Mau Mau. They were primarily Kikuyu fighters, men and women who had watched their land stolen, their fathers humiliated and their children denied education. They took oaths of loyalty to the movement and went to the forests of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares to fight. They were poorly armed against British soldiers and aircraft. They were betrayed by fellow Kenyans who collaborated with the colonial government. They were tortured in detention camps. But they fought. And their resistance changed everything.
