The Maasai Agreements: How a People Lost Half Their Land

In 1904 and again in 1911, the British colonial government forced the Maasai people into two agreements that remain among the most controversial acts of colonialism in Kenya. The 1904 agreement moved the Maasai from their northern grazing lands to make room for white settlers. The 1911 agreement removed them from their southern lands as well. The Maasai chief who signed the agreements, Lenana, was told the moves were temporary. They were not. In a single decade, the Maasai lost half of their territory. They have been seeking justice ever since.
