When Kenya's flag was designed for independence in 1963, every colour carried weight. Black for the Kenyan people. Red for the blood shed in the struggle for freedom. Green for the land. White for peace. At the centre, a Maasai warrior's shield and two crossed spears, symbols of the defence of freedom. The flag was not an accident of design. It was a declaration of what Kenya had fought for and what it intended to be. Fifty years later, the flag flies over 47 counties and on stadiums where Kenyan athletes win gold.
