The Kenyan Film Industry Finds Its Voice

By 2010, a new generation of Kenyan filmmakers was making films that did not apologise for being Kenyan. Productions like Nairobi Half Life, which became the first Kenyan film to be submitted for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, told stories set in Nairobi's streets with all their complexity, danger and beauty. The film industry that grew from Nairobi was not trying to be Hollywood or Nollywood. It was trying to be itself. The stories it told were about hustling, belonging, corruption, love and survival in a city that never stops.
