The First Hands in the Rift Valley

Long before Kenya was a name, before borders, before language as we know it, hands were shaping stone in the Rift Valley. At a site that would one day be called Lomekwi 3, near Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, the oldest known stone tools in the world were made. Three point three million years ago. These were not modern humans. They were something older, something still becoming. But they picked up stones, struck them together, and made something deliberate. It is the oldest act of making we have ever found on earth. It happened here.
