The Drought and the Crying Camels

In 2017, a severe drought struck northern Kenya. In Turkana, Marsabit and Mandera counties, pastoralists watched their livestock die. Camels that had survived previous droughts collapsed from thirst. Children were admitted to hospital with acute malnutrition. The irony was hard to ignore: Kenya was experiencing the effects of climate change while contributing virtually nothing to global emissions. Communities whose carbon footprint was essentially zero were paying the price for industrial emissions elsewhere. The 2017 drought was not the first and would not be the last.
