On 27 December 2007, Kenya held a presidential election. On 30 December, the Electoral Commission announced Mwai Kibaki the winner by a narrow margin. Raila Odinga, who many independent observers believed had actually won, refused to accept the result. What followed was the worst violence Kenya had seen since independence.
Over 1,200 people were killed. 350,000 were displaced. Neighbours turned on neighbours along ethnic lines. Houses were burned.
A church full of women and children was set ablaze in Eldoret. Kenya stared into the abyss. It took a peace deal brokered by Kofi Annan to pull it back.
