The Coup That Failed and the Freedoms That Were Lost

At dawn on 1 August 1982, junior officers of the Kenya Air Force seized the radio station in Nairobi and announced that the government had been overthrown. The coup was led by Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka. For a few hours, looting spread through Nairobi, particularly targeting Asian-owned shops. Then the army mobilised, loyal to Moi. By afternoon it was over. Ochuka was later executed. Moi's response was brutal and comprehensive. The Air Force was disbanded. Universities were closed. Hundreds were detained. And the constitutional clause making Kenya a one-party state was passed within days.
