Kenya Becomes a Crown Colony

In 1920, the East Africa Protectorate was formally renamed the Kenya Colony and Protectorate. It was more than a name change. It was a declaration of permanence. The British were not going anywhere. The colony was to be developed for white settlement, with African interests declared subordinate. The name Kenya itself, derived from the Kikuyu and Kamba name for Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga, was given to a country whose people had not been asked whether they wanted to be a colony at all.
