KANU is Born: The Party That Would Win Freedom

In May 1960, the Kenya African National Union was formed from a merger of several African political organisations. Its founding brought together Jomo Kenyatta, who was still in detention, Tom Mboya, Oginga Odinga and others who represented different communities and different visions for Kenya's future. KANU was not a monolith. It was a coalition held together by the shared goal of independence. The tensions within it, between Kikuyu and Luo, between moderates and radicals, between pro-Western and pan-African factions, would define Kenyan politics for the next sixty years.
