JM Kariuki: The MP Who Spoke for the Poor

Josiah Mwangi Kariuki was a Member of Parliament who had survived the Mau Mau detention camps and emerged with a burning conviction that independence had not delivered what it promised. He said Kenya was becoming a country of ten millionaires and ten million beggars. He was popular with the poor and dangerous to the powerful.

In March 1975, he was murdered. His body was found in the Ngong Hills. A parliamentary inquiry named government ministers as suspects.

Kenyatta's government suppressed the report. No one was ever prosecuted. Kariuki joined the long list of Kenyan politicians killed for speaking truth.
